Im new to deer hunting and I dont have much money so Im looking to buy a singl shot rifle so I can use it year round during gun season. My local pawn shop had some h&r 444 marlins for sale for under 300 in good shape. How are these rifles? They also had a single shot 45/70 I looked at too. Also had a sharp CVA stalker in 444. Whats the recoil like on these?

.444 are nice with a fair amount of recoil. If you are close to Meridian Rock House has 35 whelens for 269.95 brand new. The price varies on Handi-rifles a lot from store to store so check around before buying. I enjoy my Handi and I hunt all gun seasons with it.

My wife weighs 120 and she shoots a NEF .444 and has never complained about the recoil. The NEF 444s are nice guns and I would have no problem using one all season. The 45/70 has a good bit more recoil than the 444 and the .35 Whelen would be the hardest kicking of them all.

Handi rifles are solid, reliable guns and are a good value. The range of the .444 and the 45-70 are about the same, 150-200yds or so. The .35 Whelen will extend that to 300 or so, depending on how you a shot you are. All three have more than enough power to kill deer and most any other big game animal in North America. I've got three Handi's in 45-70, .35 Whelen, and .357 Maximum. I do more hunting with the 45-70 than the other two. It absolutely hammers deer. The recoil of all three is noticable but not punishing.
You don't have to shoot the hottest ammo available to kill deer. Bottom line, you won't be disappointed with any of these cartridges. Kevin

I bought a 444 last year used. It is a good rifle. I will use it all year unless I am hunting a big field. I would try to get the price close to 200 without a scope. 250 to 300 with a good scope.

I love my .444 handi with camo synthetic stock.
The kick is mild. It's a good hunter with the right ammo, I couldn't get the Hornady leverevolution to shoot good, Remington express shoots good.
I like it better than the .45-70 and the .35 whelen

I hunt with the 45-70
you won't be sorry with either the 444 or the 45-70

Since I bought my .444 handi two years ago, I bet I have not carried my rifle 5 times. I love it for the woods. Short, compact and deadly.

Good idea. Look in the barrel before you buy. Watch out for pitting and rust.

Have owned a Handi in .444 for four years. I shoot the Hornady Leverevolutions in mine and they group good. I have not shot a deer with it that went over 20 yards and most don't leave the spot they were in. I have not owned a 45-70 but think either would be a good choice. Less recoil with the .444. Good Luck, Good shooting and Good hunting!
