Typically they are used for herding animals (cattle, sheep, etc.) I have heard of some treeing squirrels and you may can teach it to retrieve birds or blood trail deer but it will probably never reach a level anywhere near what a dog "made" those task will do. Just like those dogs will never herd as good as heeler.

They will do just about anything you can train them to do. Had two in the past and both were really smart. Very protective too.

A blue heeler will do anything you teach it! One heck of a dog. Smart and loyal! Make good hog dogs and we had one once that would run a rabbit like nobodys business. Real good at findin wounded animals too!

I have heard of several really good blood dogs that were heelers.

awesome blood dogs. I'm not the best with dogs but this one I got is good at blood trailing. Very aggressive when he finds a deer also.

I've got one almost a year old and I started him trailing last year. Mine will do almost anything, but he doesn't like swimming to retrieve! The thing that amazed me most is his love of cows, he goes nuts just driving by them, and this was before he ever was around them

Blue Heelers are tough dogs, a good choice IMO.

Mine trailed and found his first one of the year last week. He did really good working of a leash. If he ever finds one that isn't dead, it's going to be quite a show! I've never seen one as aggressive as he was towards the deer when I would drag it.
