How much do you practice?

How much / how often do you shoot your bow? Do you brush up before season or is it something you do all year as a hobby?

I know this is not the ethical answer but I generally shoot my bow about 20 times to confirm accuracy and then go hunting. I have only lost one deer in the past 10 years and I had it on camera 10 days later. Hit bone with no penetration on him. Other than him I’ve not missed or failed to recover an animal. I limit my shots to under 30 yards.

I'm a guy who just likes to see an arrow fly. I shoot 12 months per year...but some months I shoot much more than others.

Ironically, I tend to shoot much more in the spring and summer. It's 3D season and its just a great time to shoot if you enjoy it. As the archery season approaches, I replace field tips with broadheads and shoot just one arrow at a time to make me concentrate more on each shot. Within the hunting season itself, I shoot an arrow from the treestand before I get down each time and periodically get an extended practice session on the pretty days.

I shoot just about every week...even if it’s only a dozen arrows or so.

I don't pound it any more due to health issues but I try to get out 2-4 times a week. I usually shoot 18 to 24 arrows and try to bear down and focus on each shot. I do shoot all year long because it's like therapy to me.

Hardly ever. I shot my bow bout 35ish times since late July till now.

Zero times from opening day of rifle season till then. (I only bow hunt to kill time till rifle opens)

8uptradhunter 09-16-2020 05:33 AM

I shoot just about every day I am home year round.

CMF 09-16-2020 02:36 PM

I used to pick up the bow and just shoot in September several times a week until deer season. Going on elk hunts the last two years, I have shot most of the year, very little from Dec.-March ramping up to 3-5 times a week Jun-Sep.
the time working from home during covid was really nice when i could run out and shoot a few minutes, 3-4 times a day

stork 09-18-2020 12:35 PM

I shoot a dozen or so shots every Sept, I hardly ever shoot past 30 yds

deerhunt1988 09-18-2020 06:30 PM

Past two years i've shot on average 5 days a week from June-August prepping for Sept. elk hunts. Sessions are normally short, probably an average of 12 or so arrows. Spend most of August shooting broadheads and labeling arrows.

I'll tone done my shooting some now to ~3-4 days a week until October. Then drop it a little more once season opens.

Usually a few days before opening day I check the scope for zero just to make sure all is good. Just a pain to shoot a lot without a good cocking aide.

not enough. most years I start shooting in September, maybe late august. i shoot and stop even if i get the slightest fatigue. i don't like chasing arrows around on the target thinking im off because im tired. During the archery seasond i keep a target in my truck and shoot usually 3 before every hunt. 20,30, and 40. one place i hunt is bow only, so i get to do this for the remainder of the season, and still shoot at the house when im home. I have been shooting the same bow setup and arrow setup for several years, so unless i get new strings, or make slight adjustments from year to year as my old strings wear not much changes for me.

Pre crossbow I shot every evening from an elevated stand until it was so dark I couldnt see my arrows. Post crossbow I pulled it out of the case waxed the string, oiled the wheels and greased the rail. Shot it once dead on @ 20yds. I put it back in the case. Its all comes down to time management el friendo.
