Default Airbow Bill SB2035 Alert!

Several of you might remember, Senator Kevin Blackwell (District 19 Desoto/Marshall) championing a bill last year that attempted to change a House passed disability airbow bill.... to one that the airbow was to have general legalization in the archery season. The bill died in the House after the bill was sent back for concurrence due to the outcry of concerns by the Mississippi's bowhunters.

Well, this year Sen. Blackwell took a different approach in that he introduced a bill with his name on it.... to allow it to be used in all open seasons for deer after November 30th. There are also provisions in the bill that allow it's use for small game and special seasons created by the MDWFP for the purposes of CWD sample collection. It passed the full Senate with ease and is now headed to the House Wildlife committee..... where it unfortunately seems to have very little opposition.

Looking at this bill on it's face value, there would seem little to fear by the states bowhunters, Yet, this bill is very likely a 'trojan horse'....in that it seems harmless at first, but can be changed to include archery usage at any point in the approval process with very little knowledge or input by the sportsmen of this state.

An additional concern is that if this is passed, it will almost for certain come back the next year in a form that would legalize it in archery season! This time with a vocal contingent of 'drum beaters' saying it's...'just like a bow.' In this regard, it would mirror the legalization path of the crossbow...in that it was approved for non-archery usage until there was a following; then pushed for legalization in the archery season. The mere fact that it's called an "AIRBOW" should provide more than ancedotal reasoning of the true intent of the people pushing this agenda.

It seems that our worst fears are coming true in that crossbow legalization has served as a further transitional step to a new 'archery' weapon. If passed for archery usage, I guess the next step would be a firearm; which effectively eliminates the archery season in principal.

The Mississippi Bowhunters Association has grave concerns over this bill and are in the process of developing a proactive strategic plan to address this new development. Meanwhile, I would strongly suggest that you call your House of Representative legislator to voice your concern over a possible archery inclusion in SB2035. All legislators can be reached by calling 601-359-3770. The switchboard can most likely put you in touch with your House legislator if you don't know them.

The state is slowly, but surely moving toward weapon of choice beginning on day 1 for no apparent biologically sound, wildlife related reason.

I agree Randy...in my world I'm starting to hear rumors (limited though) of license sales boycotts by bowhunters. It seems the only thing that matters in season settings is how much money can be made so I guess some feel that's the only the way to be heard.

The crazy part is manufacturers keep coming up with new weapons to stimulate product sales....and we as sportsmen buy them. We are on their string.

This is what will end up happening...especially when you start mentioning “CWD sample collection”. October 1st will sound like an ambush in a jungle before too long.

biologically sound and Mississippi don't belong in the same sentence

Same guy that co-authored the asinine statewide dog permit program.

Is Admin gonna make a new Folder for Airbow or just stick it in the Crossbow folder?
