Default Novice POV

Itís been four years on the fly rod now and Iíve discovered a few things. Fly Fishing vs Conventional fishing is much like Bow Hunting vs Rifle. When I hunted I could tap a Buck at 200yds with a 270WSM consistently. Then I started bow hunting where stealth and patience were key. To me Fly fishing is like that. So many things can go wrong. The line can tangle on my feet or wrap the rod-butt. Wind can pick up and mess up a good day on the water. Even my shadow or the color of my shirt makes a difference. When sight fishing sometimes its easy to get excited and put the Fly right on the nose of a Redfish. After some heartbreaks Iíve learned a better presentation is inside the fishís field of view with a slight movement. When you think about it a baitfish or shrimp NEVER swims towards a predator. In nature it just donít go down like that. Itís just more natural for the fish to turn and pick up the fly like it would when feeding. IMHO

PM your addy and I’ll send you some different flies. Doesn’t look like I’m getting to go much lately.
Right, it’s like getting their attention without spooking. It’s all about presentation like all fishing just different limitations to overcome. Your biggest limitations are distance and depth in fly fishing but the genre is very broad. Maybe some KILLER flies will help. Ha Ha

Thanks Denny. Iíve done the FFI Bronze, Silver and Gold casting challenge. That was very interesting. I enjoyed it a lot. As far as tying goes I can knot up some good looking Buggs. I just need to allocate more time with the Fly. Because I charter all year I stay hooked up just about every week. But this summer Iíll make a point of keeping a fly rod handy.

Shucks figured you’d be doing fly fishing charters outa that nifty skiff of yours by now. At least you whipping out great distances and tight loops after achieving those goals. Didn’t know they had that. I got a lotta rigs that are OK but a few are great ie casting is almost effortless and extra enjoyable. Not sure what is covered in FFIcasting but some special techs for the salt, wind. LeftyKreh is a good source.

I sold my skiff. Just couldnít run two boats. I do run fly out of my big boat weíve caught, Jacks, Reds, Trout and a few others. Pitched at a few Bonita but didnít have the right fly at that time. Iíll be ready this summer

I like those but mine have a red stripe running through the middle or a red wrap on the body then UV over it.

we are at the islands now wade fishing for big black drum and reds on the fly. I love this time of year. We have been watching you flies on FB. I agree with your original assessment of fly placement. Sometime its just to exciting and I need to tell my self to relax!
